Description of how IP Camera work.

  1. Wireless have 2 networks, LAN(Local Area Network) and WAN(Wide Area Network).
  2. If you have a IP camera, use cat5 cable to connect between router & camera, camera will receive a LAN ip address from router.
  3. When the camera receive local ip address, you can view camera within the same network. For example:
    Router IP: 192.168.0.1
    Camera IP: 192.168.0.120
    PC: 192.168.0.2
    Wifi Cell: 192.168.0.3
Above those device, they have the same network ID 192.168.0.X, so they are in the same network and can communicate to each other.
  4. Then PC & Wifi Cell can access to network, but for IP camera, not currently, because the network protocol is different from PC&Cell. Camera needs to do Port Forwarding that allow Internet traffic pass into router which will forward traffic to Camera. Then camera can access to Internet now.
  5. When you access to Internet, your router has a external ip address that is Internet ip address. (Router directly get the ip address the same as modem.) All device connecting through router has the same Internet IP address but may be using different ports.
  6. Camera have an option to configure its own port which will not be conflict with other device that is using default port 80.
  7. Configure a specific port to camera, and then router will forward specific traffic to specific port.
  8. With configuring different ports, camera then can function as a network device that access to Internet without being conflict with other traffic.
  9. Then You can access to the camera by IP address with specific port.
